Sidra Medicine is a specialist women’s and children’s hospital and research center located in Education City, Doha. A member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, Sidra Medicine provides tertiary and quaternary-level healthcare focused on pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, and neonatal care. The facility combines clinical services with a biomedical research mission and maintains an academic affiliation with Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar.
Overview and Opening
Sidra Medicine opened its outpatient clinics in May 2018 and its main hospital in January 2018, following an extended construction and commissioning period. The project was initiated by Qatar Foundation under the patronage of Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, with the vision of creating a world-class academic medical center dedicated to women’s and children’s health.
The hospital building was designed by the architectural firm Pelli Clarke Pelli (now Pelli Clarke & Partners) and features a distinctive curved glass facade. The facility cost an estimated several billion dollars to construct and equip, reflecting Qatar’s commitment to developing a healthcare infrastructure that meets international standards.
Clinical Services
Sidra Medicine provides a comprehensive range of specialist clinical services.
Pediatric Services
The hospital offers tertiary and quaternary pediatric care across multiple specialties, including pediatric surgery, pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery, pediatric oncology, pediatric neurology and neurosurgery, neonatal intensive care, and pediatric emergency medicine. Sidra serves as the primary referral center for complex pediatric cases in Qatar.
The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is one of the largest and most advanced in the region, providing care for premature and critically ill newborns. The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) offers multi-disciplinary critical care for children with severe medical and surgical conditions.
Women’s Health
Sidra Medicine provides obstetric services including high-risk pregnancy management, maternal-fetal medicine, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. The hospital also offers gynecological services including reproductive medicine, gynecological oncology, and minimally invasive surgery.
The maternity unit is designed to provide a patient-centered experience, with private delivery suites, advanced fetal monitoring, and dedicated neonatal resuscitation facilities adjacent to the delivery rooms.
Outpatient Services
In addition to inpatient care, Sidra operates extensive outpatient clinics covering general pediatrics, developmental pediatrics, allergology, dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and other specialties. The outpatient facility serves as the first point of contact for many families seeking specialist care in Qatar.
Research Mission
Sidra Medicine operates a dedicated research division that conducts biomedical and clinical research relevant to women’s and children’s health. Research programs focus on areas including genomics, precision medicine, immunology, diabetes, mental health, and population health.
The hospital’s research infrastructure includes state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, biobanking capabilities, and advanced computing resources for genomic data analysis. Sidra participates in international research collaborations and publishes findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Research at Sidra is closely linked to its clinical operations, with a translational research model that aims to convert laboratory discoveries into improved patient care. This integration of research and clinical practice is a defining characteristic of academic medical centers globally.
Qatar Foundation Affiliation
As a member of Qatar Foundation, Sidra Medicine benefits from the foundation’s strategic oversight, financial support, and integration within the broader Education City ecosystem. Qatar Foundation’s involvement ensures alignment between Sidra’s mission and Qatar’s national human development objectives under Qatar National Vision 2030.
The Qatar Foundation affiliation also connects Sidra to the network of universities and research institutes within Education City, facilitating academic collaboration, student training, and joint research initiatives.
Weill Cornell Medicine Partnership
Sidra Medicine maintains an academic affiliation with Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), the medical college branch campus located in Education City. This partnership supports medical education, clinical training rotations for WCM-Q students, joint research programs, and faculty development.
The Weill Cornell affiliation provides Sidra with access to a global academic network and supports the hospital’s goal of operating as a teaching hospital where clinical care, education, and research are integrated.
Staffing and Accreditation
Sidra Medicine employs a multinational clinical workforce recruited from leading healthcare institutions worldwide. The hospital has pursued international accreditation and benchmarking against global quality standards to ensure that its clinical outcomes and patient safety metrics meet or exceed international norms.
Strategic Significance
Sidra Medicine is a cornerstone of Qatar’s healthcare development strategy. By establishing a specialist academic medical center, Qatar aims to reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for complex pediatric and maternal care, build domestic research capacity in biomedical sciences, and attract medical talent to the country.
The hospital also contributes to Qatar’s broader soft power objectives by positioning Doha as a center of medical excellence and innovation in the Gulf region.
